6 New Features in VisualEyes™ 3rd Generation

06/28/21

Last October, Micromedical by Interacoustics drastically improved its vestibular testing equipment options with the release of the 3rd generation of VisualEyes™. Combining videonystamography (VNG), video head impulse testing (vHIT), and rotary chair testing in one powerful package, this drastically upgraded system comes jam packed with a wealth of valuable new features.

Here are the top features of the VIsualEyes™ 3rd generation, according to Dr. Michelle Petrak, the Director of Clinical Audiology at Interacoustics.

VORTEQ Sensor Protocols

There are two separate packages, which use the VORTEQ™ inertial measurement unit (IMU), that can be added on to VisualEyes™. These are VORTEQ™ Diagnostic and VORTEQ™ Assessment.

VORTEQ™ Diagnostic

The diagnostic package includes vHIT and active head rotation (AHR). It allows you to perform binocular vHIT with VNG goggles. In the AHR test, the patient moves their head to the beat of a metronome and the software measures gain, phase and symmetry of eye and head movements up to 5 kHz horizontally and 3 kHz vertically. There is also the option to perform passive head rotation tests.

VORTEQ™ Assessment

This offering adds the advanced Dix-Hallpike, lateral head roll, and dynamic visual acuity (DVA) tests. Dix-Hallpike and lateral head roll are ideal for BPPV testing, including a 3D head model, maneuver guides, and torsional eye tracking. DVA is more useful in functional VOR assessment, providing objective data in response to rotational or functional head-movement stimuli.

3D Modeling

The 3D head model featured in Interacoustics EyeSeeCam is now available in VisualEyes™. This tool is useful for providing objective feedback on the quality of head impulses. It provides anatomically correct semicircular canals and reliable visual feedback.

Since it is integrated with the inertial measurement unit (IMU) in the camera, the 3D head model is very accurate. This means that when the patient turns their head, the 3D head model also rotates. Following a head impulse, the activated semicircular canal will turn red and the inhibited semicircular canal will turn blue. You can view the 3D head model from the all angles.

Torsional Eye Movement Analysis

You can now measure torsional nystagmus with the 3rd Generation VisualEyes. The inclusion of a torsional algorithm makes measuring torsional nystagmus much more effective than doing so with the naked eye. Torsional eye movement recordings are a valuable alongside horizontal and vertical because, together, they can more accurately confirm a diagnosis.

EyeSeeCam vHIT

With the 3rd Generation VisualEyes™, you can perform vHIT and VNG in the same system. The EyeSeeCam vHIT is now integrated into VisualEyes™, allowing you to save time spent testing each patient by having one combined test file and overall summary report. Additionally, you can now perform monocular oculomotor screening within VisualEyes™ by using the EyeSeeCam goggles.

Saccadometry

Another excellent new feature of the 3rd Generation of VisualEyes™, saccadometry is an extremely useful tool when working with central-vestibular-disorder patients. It consists of two tests: pro-saccades and anti-saccades.

  • Pro-saccades - Subjects are instructed to look to the center. For each saccade jump, they are to look at the new target, and then return to the center dot and wait for the next jump.
  • Anti-saccades - Subjects are instructed to look in the opposite direction of the saccade jump and then return to center and wait for the next jump.

is well known within the field of neurology and can provide clinically actionable insights into neurological disorders, such as concussion, traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative diseases, movement disorders, depression, and attention-deficit disorders, to name a few.

Rotary Chair Testing

The 3rd Generation of VisualEyes™ includes several rotary chair tests. In addition to Orion Reclining, it offers new rotary chair options, including Orion Auto-Traverse and Orion Comprehensive.

  • Orion Reclining is powerful and space-saving. There is no need for a booth enclosure, so it can be reclined to any position, allowing you to perform the entire VNG test battery from the chair.
  • Orion Auto-Traverse is an enclosed rotary chair built to deliver precisely controlled stimuli and superior data analysis of the VOR. It offers acceleration up to 200 deg/sec2 and can accommodate for patient weight up to 180 kg/400 lbs.
  • Orion Comprehensive Chair has everything the Auto-Traverse Chair offers, except the off-axis centripetal option.
